VAL THORENS French Ski Resort Official Winter Opening will be on Saturday November 26, 2016 and will stay open up to May 01, 2017. Val Thorens is a cosmopolitan, dynamic and constantly evolving resort thanks to a supercharged events and entertainment programme. Every season, the ski resort of Val Thorens organises sports events, shows and even music concerts! The Sports Centre offers a wide range of activities in a 7,500 sq. m covered space, open 7 days a week from 10am to 10pm. The Spa is reserved for people over 16 years old and proposes saunas, a steam room and jacuzzis in addition to two swimming pools, including one balneotherapy pool for total relaxation. The Club proposes to children a wimming pool with water line, fun pool with sprays and waterfalls, paddling pool,.... From the age of six months, water-based activities are organised by swimming instructors : water babies, aquati kids, p´tit dauphins, private swimming lessons,.... From the age of 16 : let off some energy to music in one of the many aquagym, aquabiking or swimming classes.
Whatever your age or sports level a number of activities are available at the Resort : skicross, mountain biking on snow, paragliding, snowmobile, walks, snowshoeing, sledding, dancing and relaxation at the Sports Centre, aquaerobics at the Aquaclub... Ski fitness is to ski touring what jogging is to running; a cardio activity carried out wearing lightweight clothing, close-fitting trousers and a thin jacket.
Val Thorens was created in December 1971 when an exceptional natural environment was discovered by a group of visionary pioneers. It is located in Savoie, Massif de la Vanoise, Vallée des Belleville, Sommet des 3 Vallées. Technical and commercial innovations, bold approaches and human challenges, the history of the resort is punctuated with high points which all played their part in turning it into the exceptional destination it is today.
In 1981/1982, SETAM took on the project of building the largest cable car in the world, the Cime Caron Cable Car which ascended to an altitude of 3,200 metres. This development marked the beginning of a new era for Val Thorens and positioned the resort amongst the leading major winter sports resorts.

In 1990 (in collaboration with Denis Creissels), SETAM engineers invented the Funitel Lift Concept (a bi-cable unit boasting excellent wind resistance) and installed the first of its kind at the foot of the Péclet glacier. SETAM then handed over the patent to ski lift manufacturers who exported the concept throughout the world.
In 1995, a double embarkation chair lift was created which simultaneously provided a higher transportation rate, and improved passenger comfort. At the same time, the link between the Maurienne/the 3 Vallées was built, via Orelle, with the construction of the longest gondola lift in the world in one section. In 2004, at the Oxalys restaurant, Jean Sulpice received his first Michelin star and became the youngest chef in France to have the honour....
